Twenty-seventh Anniversary

The day started at Starbucks and ended in sweet memories.

We had tickets to go whale watching. The day was beautiful. Ray and I stood at the Marina sipping our coffee from the dock waiting to board. We ease dropped on a group of girls talking about their greyhound companions and the rescue organization they adopted them from. We watched diving ducks and seagull’s play in the morning light until finally the gangplank was open and we along with the other passengers could board.

We hung back not wanting to join the crush of impatient passengers hurrying aboard. Good thing we did. Though we had assigned seating someone at our table had brought extra children with them. "Would you mind sitting in the wheel house with the captain?" we were asked. "It really is the best seat in the house" She was right.

We got to see where the seals give birth to their pups. We saw eagles, their nests and favorite fishing grounds. There were minki whales, seabirds of incredible variety, Pacific dolphins and finally the beautiful Orca. Thank you Captain Midnight.

Majesty Ray's lens does not do justice to the breath taking beauty of the mountains and sea. Mount Baker seemed to float above the Orca playground. Every time I look at this mountain now I think about the Orca seeing it from their northern viewpoint.

The Orca and Mt. Baker
So many Orca! You can see the ripples where other members of the pod have surfaced and gone under before Ray could say, "smile!" One young Orca would put his head up and look at us looking at him. Another youngster would breach and splash down on her side. Ray has lots of pictures of her splash but could not get her.

Orca from J Pod
Close enough to touch. These two came out from under the boat. Beautiful in the clear water off of the San Juan and Gulf Islands. Later a cow and her calf also swam under the boat.

Thar she blows!
